Hello,
I am new to this forum and relatively new to the joys of lure making.  I currently hand carve all of my lures, but after seeing the amazing pics displayed on this thread i may need to purchase a lathe.  Thank you for posting them and if anyone has any advice or tips (perhaps an affordable, quality lathe) i would love to hear from you.

If you don't mind did you change the lip size or it just swims higher because of no slope on the head.

well surfstix....i use two differant lips on that  surfster    i make them with the small lefty lip 7/8x9/16......or salty has the surfster lip  for plug sizes 1.5oz-2.0oz......which i also use for a small danny plugs.......personaly i like the surfster cause it has a nice cup........and since i make smaller plugs in the 4.5-5" range to 1.5oz.......it gives the plugs a certain wiggle like the UPS driver at saltys loading dock ;D .........

Thanks for the reply Handyman.  Any advice on sealing?  Ive just been spray painting the hitting them with a high gloss poly.  I have a lot more questions but i guess taking it one at a time is best.  Thanks for the help

hay acpemdergast  yea got to seal your plugs.....[waterlox marine & zinsser sealcoat] are the two i use  and ive been favoring waterlox.....depending on how many plugs your gona seal......but lets start with one   get a container like a 1qt paint can  a clean one  or a jar with a screw top.......fill the can/jar with waterloxmarine   or zinsser 100% shellac sealer  and submerge your plug under the sealer  i like to let the plug to sit in the sealer for 15/20 min....so it will soak up the sealer [ remember the plug must be pre drilled] so the sealer penatrates into the wood......once sealed remove the plug and let the plug dry 24+ hours drying is the important part....if you use boiled linseedoil that can take days, months, years to dry......once the plug is dryed i like to prime the plug  i use rust-oleum primer.....just make sure your plug is throughly dry on each step.   once your plug is all painted up   get some two part epoxy and coat your plug with that  i use flexcoat or devcon 30min epoxys  for a good hard finish...but you must spinn the plug to prevent sags.....a rod dryer motor works well....... good luck
