How To Install Flaptails

I just recieved my order of flaptails from Salty.  At Plugfest, I was told that the flaptails work best if attached to the side or bottom of the plug near the end.  They said the action was better if installed that way instead of at the tail loop.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Also, I would like to learn of some options as to how flaptails are attached to the side of the plug.

Put them on the back and be done with it. Small split ring to #5 crane swivel, then other side of crane swivel onto the tail loop before you close it.
