Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on January 01, 2010, 04:58:08 PM
tksurf those are very nice! this is one of the reasons I started this forum. Different ideas for others.

Any idea how the surfster swims with the one hook? I'm sure it swims real nice those lips will swim just about anything.

Your scales look awesome. I'm going to do a video tutorial when I get some time on how to do that.
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on January 01, 2010, 07:35:04 PM
The scale pattern came from a mesh bag that some pearl onions came in, I quickly learned to carefully peel the mesh off while the paint was still wet.  The surfster with the single hook swims very well, as I remember I drilled in some extra weight in the belly also. Learning as I go.

Produce section is a great area for netting..Box of clementines, onion bags, tomatoes on the vine all have netting that I've used for scales....

Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on February 21, 2010, 09:19:14 AM
Here is a 1.5 oz slim needle fish that I modified by shortening it to 6 inch length by cutting off from the front, then I slimmed it down and flattened the sides on the front from a little behind the eyes forward, I hope the second picture shows that. Then I also added 3/16 oz tail weight. It casts like a bullet and swims with a nice lazy side to side motion, can hardly wait to use it this year.

nice plugs guys    the popper is one of my favorites

Yeah I'm beginning to like these poppers very much also.  I think the dannys and pencils will always be  my favs though.
Can't wait to build a few bottles also, I have a few in the works(on lathe) but also want to build a few kits also to compare.  Free handing the head and getting it right is a major PITA, even after you know what you need to do

Wow those are amazing! ;) how did u get that smeared effect on the plug?? ???
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on March 16, 2010, 10:44:20 PM
hay striperman...i used marbling pigment...from mudhole tackle.. base coat your plug white........mix your two part epoxi  i use flex coat
1- pour from your mix  2 nickle size spots of epoxi on a piece of foil
2- mix one spot with marbling pigment  u dont need much i would say 1/8"dot of pigment and your choice of color
3- mix the other nickle size spot of epoxi with a differant color
4- now with the remaining epoxi which is clear (i like to add  glitter to it).coat your plug
5- onece all coated take a tooth pick dip it into your first color and put a small dot on your plug about 1/8"  and drag the color across the plug all differant directions with the pic
6- do the same with the second color... but in a differant  location on the plug and using a differant pic  rember to spin the plug to keep things even with no sags
7-just keep dragging the two pigments useing the tip of the toothpic   until u like the effect
8-now let the plug dry  the plug must spin until dry...i use a rod dryer motor to spin the plug slowly
go to YOUTUBE or WWW.MUDHOLE.COM (http://WWW.MUDHOLE.COM)  for video instructions CRB MARBLING good luck :)
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on March 17, 2010, 05:57:01 AM

Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on March 26, 2010, 07:27:30 AM
say salty!!  im not sure what the borax  dose..........but when i mixed it in water and then added the different colors of paint.........when  the drop of paint hits the water  they explode in differant directions............then i dip the guitar body in the  paint and water.....submerge it   then when i pull the body up  the paint sticks  to the guitar in differant colors... marbelizing  it ..........ita a pain in the you know what..and plus u have to seal all the neck pockets and pickup cavaitys.......i did it once  but didnt do it ever again.........there is a video on it

Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on September 05, 2010, 06:46:29 PM
Handy those things swim nice. Did you put too thick of a clear on it or something? Bending the lip up is going to make it dive more, down is going to keep it on top. And I would assume you know not to tie direct it needs a loop on the front. Those things are pretty much hard to frig up?

that's a tallywhacker swimmer. Doesn't take a lefty 1 lip it takes a pikie 3 lip...you got WAY too small of a lip on there.
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on September 05, 2010, 07:39:12 PM
handyman i just took the tallywhacker and the pikiezilla down to the creek for a swim.the tally was draging tail till i took the finishing nail out,its the tailend of a 12" sluggo i think the nail gives it more action, not so for the tallywhacker, swam great once i removed the nail.i really like the way the pikie swam.i'm going to try both on the open beach once things clear up around here.

Hey handyman whats the trick with putting your logo on the lures ?

- Mark
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on September 25, 2010, 11:17:22 PM
hay mark!.....i use a brother P-TOUCH 1180 labler........mud hole tackle also sells small decals   made in the U.S.A  flag decals........ when u print out your logo  take a sissor and trim close to the letters  the reason for this is that the lable wont curl        staples sells the printer..............mud hole tackle can also print a lable for you but it could get expensive.........one nice thing about the labler is that all the guys i fish with get there names on the plugs i make for them..........check out mud hole tackle for the made in the u.s.a.............hope this helps         :)

Tell Larry Yates I said hi! Great people to deal with. Tiger is their cheif engineer, not many get to talk to him directly nowadays. Very much in demand. Many don't know it but Quigley was the one's who designed the original Dodge Ramcharger suspension if you can remember them. I believe they also had their hands in the original Jeep Quadratrac too if memory serves me correctly.

not at all i took some grizzley hackle took some  flex coat rod building glue spread the glue on the plug and atached the feathers to the plug i let it dry and then applied two coats of finish...........yea my next step is to do a swimmer in the same way  and paint it yellow   and then add the grizzley hackle to make the school bus

Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on April 07, 2013, 06:34:13 PM
the pike-zilla was a little rough. Had some good gouges, but was able to sand them out for the most part. I'm still having a hard time with the jointeds. If you look close at the one I posted, I ended up screwing up the through wire on the tail piece, had to cut it and ended up using magnum screw eyes...lol. All my fault, just have to get better at turning tail loops. I need to post more pics. Have a bunch more to show you. The hand carved is a s$%t show for me. Never looked at the online diagram(ooops...lol), so that might not come out too great. My ONLY problem I have with your kits is that I don't have more! ;D
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on April 07, 2013, 07:34:52 PM
Gouges from things in the bag?

You have to practice tail loops. Watch the video I have on yootoob that is one of the easiest ways to do it.
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on April 07, 2013, 09:39:49 PM
not really sure....there were some spots that were splintered and had some gouges like you get from turning. No biggie though, just sanded down, and ready to roll.

ooops. Forgot about this one. It's not with my fishing stuff, because I told my 3 yr old daughter that I made her a fishing lure, because her favorite color is pink. Well, she named her Sally, and takes her everywhere now, even to bed. So I think I should consider that one "lost" to a 25lber! lol

It's great to have a place to share pics without having to be called a plug assembler! :( Lots of beautiful plugs in here!

Here are two of mine in action this weekend. I lost the brand new Wonderbread to to a Bluefish bite-off about 10 minutes after I caught a couple Stripers on it. The next day, I brought one from last year that I hadn't used.

"It's great to have a place to share pics without having to be called a plug assembler!"

IT'S JEALOUSY that you have skills others don't. Don't ever let someone knock you for something you get fun and enjoyment out of. There's too many internet heros on fishing boards these days. SOL, SB, you name it. I dislike this look down over your eyeglasses type of view that many have of people.

It's also cliques....these guys all want to see their buddies sell plugs under the table and get a big name so if your not a member of the clique then sayonara. Wrong attitude to have. Wonder why the world is so effed up today.

well said scott........i couldnt agree with you more.......yea and some people think your showing off......like your the best plug builder in the world but thats realy not the case....a pic of your plug only gives the next builder some new ideas to try and to put his/her ideas into that same plug.....some people just misinterpret ther hole concept........well said my friend.......now on the otherside.....NICE!!! I thought I'd put up some kits I've done over the past 2 years. It's funny when you look back at some of them how you can pick out things you wish you could have done differently. But that's how you get better I guess. They all fish well with their imperfections though! :)

Thanks guys! I look back at those now and am embarrassed actually. I think the wraps came out pretty but I was adding 2 too many turns. I think I was actually pulling the nose loop into the plug and I could never get them tight enough. Now I just do 2 wraps and call it a day.

Close, it's Abalone, in natural and ice blue.  I have a bit of experience inlaying it in other applications and thought this would work too.

It believe it was. that or a red potato bag. i don't know which one i have been saving anything that looks like it will work.  I have a question after the lure is painted do they need to be coated with epoxy or just clear coat paint. If so, which epoxy is good for a beginner to try?

Nice job on that popper, Firemustang1.  Use the search button up top - it's your best friend for finding answers to your epoxy question.  There's lots of great information and instructions on this site.

Sent in by a customer who was in my shop recently. I gave him a big bag of blowouts, misdrills, etc to play with.

These were all junker bodies that I couldn't complete. Might have had a hairline crack, bug holes, whatever LOL he did pretty good with them!

This is my first one. I tried copying a paint scheme I saw on the forum, but got carried away w/ the spots. Now it looks like a rainbow trout. I'm hopeing a snook or redfish will still want to eat it. I had fun getting it painted. Hardware & epoxy tonight.

Thin your epoxy a little more with denatured alcohol and put it on thin. It will stop the distortion you see in some of those. They look most excellent!

This is my 2nd kit, the Micro-spook. The hooks are #1 trebles, they seem sorta big. Does Saltys sell a "short shank 2/0 siwash? Also, what do people do about the gap between belly and bushing? Should I have sanded belly flat where bushing sits? Thanks!
Title: Re: Post your kit pictures
Post by: Out Fishing on February 15, 2017, 06:48:29 PM
#1 hook  should fit well on these, one thing I've done and don't usually recommend is to cut the belly hook and open to attach directly to the swivel, it gets the hook a bit closer to the body. 3/0 siwash is the smallest we stock, I would not recommend this hook on this lure though. Some people will bend the grommet very slightly, you can take a piece of wood and drill it with a large drill then use it to "peen" the grommet flat, or you can recess, or leave as is.
