-
Bunker,
What sealing method did you go with?
-
say i like the ruler
-
say nice stuff..... bunker
-
Croak- i think im going to go with Handys method, using the Zinser quick soak. i just hope the primer i use will stick to it(urathane based). one friend thats a chemist says they will(has no actual paint exp) one friend that painted cars for 20 years says it wont. so FINGERSCROSSED!!
Handy- thanks! i needed a ruler on my rod bench but i need something with a little bit of class. so a delux fish tape sufficed

Nice work... I'm happy I can get kits sealed, (your method) assembled and Spray bombed.
Tom C.
-
yea tom i lathe my plugs out..... cut/drill......im working on some eels to fish at night with.......the tuffest plugs to do are needles only cause of the threw wire hole....and long bodylenth....i drill all the body holes on the needles first and then drill 1/2 way from the nose end to the belly....then drill 1/2 way from the tail towards the belly hook hole
thanks tom :)

Hello,
I am new to this forum and relatively new to the joys of lure making. I currently hand carve all of my lures, but after seeing the amazing pics displayed on this thread i may need to purchase a lathe. Thank you for posting them and if anyone has any advice or tips (perhaps an affordable, quality lathe) i would love to hear from you.
-
hay! acpendergast handcarving thats an art....well im running a jet midi lathe oh i can see it now.............your hooked!!! :)
-
Damn Handy your going to town love those surfsters w/o the slope did ya swim them yet? The wounded spook and mandingo are really nice too.
-
WOW Handy looks great!
-
say thanks gents thanks for the great commaints yea the surfster has the same action as the orginal version ..........maybe just not as deep with out the slope :)
-
If you don't mind did you change the lip size or it just swims higher because of no slope on the head.
-
well surfstix....i use two differant lips on that surfster i make them with the small lefty lip 7/8x9/16......or salty has the surfster lip for plug sizes 1.5oz-2.0oz......which i also use for a small danny plugs.......personaly i like the surfster cause it has a nice cup........and since i make smaller plugs in the 4.5-5" range to 1.5oz.......it gives the plugs a certain wiggle like the UPS driver at saltys loading dock ;D .........
-
Thanks for your info kind of new at all this stuff thats why I'm sticking to the kits haven't done any straying from the norm I appreciate your input.
-
Thanks for the reply Handyman. Any advice on sealing? Ive just been spray painting the hitting them with a high gloss poly. I have a lot more questions but i guess taking it one at a time is best. Thanks for the help
-
hay acpemdergast yea got to seal your plugs.....[waterlox marine & zinsser sealcoat] are the two i use and ive been favoring waterlox.....depending on how many plugs your gona seal......but lets start with one get a container like a 1qt paint can a clean one or a jar with a screw top.......fill the can/jar with waterloxmarine or zinsser 100% shellac sealer and submerge your plug under the sealer i like to let the plug to sit in the sealer for 15/20 min....so it will soak up the sealer [ remember the plug must be pre drilled] so the sealer penatrates into the wood......once sealed remove the plug and let the plug dry 24+ hours drying is the important part....if you use boiled linseedoil that can take days, months, years to dry......once the plug is dryed i like to prime the plug i use rust-oleum primer.....just make sure your plug is throughly dry on each step. once your plug is all painted up get some two part epoxy and coat your plug with that i use flexcoat or devcon 30min epoxys for a good hard finish...but you must spinn the plug to prevent sags.....a rod dryer motor works well....... good luck
-
wow :o
-
Thanks again Handyman

-
say salt i figured it out......ya had the info on the site. :)
-
Handy two things. I saw a picture earlier that the wire came out the center of the lure, you want it to come out below center and as far back towards the lip you can. Typically you add the lip in and if needed cut a slot or drill a hole in it with a battery drill.
Adding weight-I done some playing with that and found a slug between the lip and belly hole gave you a nice dive without removing the wiggle. I stuck a 4 gram small belly wt in there originally. Keep your finish coats thin so you don't add alot of bulk to them. I wanna do one in foil now. I have some special hot foil that would look pisser on one. Going to make a bunch more. Lots of fun to fish. I'm going to do some more with these this winter.
-
I'll send you a few lips to play with. You can cross reference them to the sizes on the site.
-
yea thanks salt........i went on your site and found where to install the weight...........plus your right i might have to come down with the threw wire..........see what you started.......i saw that pic of the swimmer ya did in an hour.....and now im carving wood.......thanks for the help

hay salt just the other day im on the beach walkin to the water i have one of these swimmers on my leader i meet one of the regulars louie on the beach and he has a buddy with him............lou tells me he likes the swimmer i gave him last week and the action is great.......so his buddy wants to check one out.......so i take the one i have off my rod......and hand it to him......he gives it a try.....and says hay do you have more of these yes i replied i always carry two of every plug in my bag...................so i told him to keep it .........and i said by the way you can retire that Bomber lure your useing and wished him good luck...........the water was flat and no wind/no chop got two good bumps with no fish on....did manage to get two small fluke on a sandeel teaser.
-
Bruce on the lip length don't be afraid to sand back some of the lip that goes into the lure...It will make the lure stronger-you have alot of cut in those pics...your gonna whack a nice fish on those!
-
hay thanks salty in other words dont cut into the the swimmer to deep in the lip slot..........just sand back on the lip.........maybe an 1/8..........correct........im trying to get better detail around the lip slot and filling the belly hole in nice and smooth........but now is see your right by cutting back on the lip it will tighten up that void...............thanks man......ill post the finished product when done........say i just got done reading about Frank F the banana plug guy....he was one hell of a fisherman.......seems he was fishing montalk when a pod of bunker came threw with bass on them and he couldnt hook up on any fish........so he designed a plug that looked like a bunker and called it the banana......you tube also has a video of one of his old time friends telling the fishing stories............................you-da-man!
-
Hey Handy do you have a link to the banana plug with Frank f ??
Thanking you Mark

Just beautiful. You do some damn fine work, my friend. Also, I really like your idea of the grizzly hackle. Grizzly's a killer on flies, no reason why it won't do the same on a plug.
-
thanks pj....yea i tie clousers with grizzley..........makes for a good teaser

Handy this is one of the nicest plugs I have seen. Is there any way you could post a dye how-to video to show us the process? I would love to try this out
-
thanks littorally......i use transtint dyes......its concentrated so ya dont need much....couple of drops in alcohol which dry fast keep adding the drops till ya get a color density ya like transtint comes in all differant colors.....dont seal your plug ya have to dye it first......then seal it the dye has to penatrate the wood first....let your plug cure overnight aftersealing it...put your eyes in and belly gromitt and your ready for your finish E-tex or flexcoat are a choice of my own.........its basicly the same as spraying your plug with paint useing an airbrush.... but instead your useing a transtint dye on figured wood.....that plug there is done with flame maple.....all my needles are done this way.....thanks again and good luck any questions feel free to ask

-
hey there littorally ...thats no kit thats something i lathed out.....the body measures out to 3.25" long and the width is 3/4" wide......swims like a champ....theres a vid some where on this site with the swimming action........first i tryed a hurley tail which swam fine but the gaggs eel tail produce more action......swimms great bass love em......but the blue fish love the tails........to get the tail from slipping when casting wrap the hookshank with tying thread or some type of braid ( Billsbody braid ) then super glue the tail on.....thanks again and good luck
