Title: Epoxy Questions
Post by: Out Fishing on November 10, 2012, 10:45:10 AM
Hey Salty; to settle an argument: Does water weaken epoxy or specifically, would the moisture content in acrylic paint (used for coloring) prevent the epoxy from curing properly? Would the acrylic polymers in the paint do something similar? Is 70% drugstore alcohol a suitable thinning agent? Sorry to bother you with this stuff, but I need a professional opinion, and you're the most knowledgeable guy I know. (see, I can be nice, especially when I want something ;D )

Water does not weaken epoxy. Moisture content from paint? Mixing paint with it? Then you got bad juju

you want to thin with drops of denatured alcohol. not rubbing alcohol. denatured.

Thanks for the info Salty - some fly tyers use TINY amounts of acrylic paint to supply a little translucent color, but some clown was telling me that any amount is OK as long as you mix it thoroughly.  I just didn't buy it. If you can stand one more dumb question: why would denatured alcohol be superior to rubbing alcohol as a thinning agent? Is there a difference other than moisture content? I swear, I won't have any more idiotic questions - if you answer this one, I'll go back to my usual method of obtaining information by interrogating winos in alleyways.

I wouldn't mix anything wet with it unless it was meant to thin it.

I have added pearls, Paints, Denatured Alcohol, to my epoxy and i don't experience any issues.

You know, I think I've got a bottle or two of Testors kicking around here somewhere - I'll have to give it a shot just for the heck of it.

I found a bottle of pearl acrylic medium while I was rooting around, and while I'm at it, I think I'll try that too. Wonder where all this stuff comes from - I can't remember buying any of it. Must be all those vodka-dead brain cells that never grew back. Or maybe too many years of sniffing Flexament. :-\

PJay I could send you some way cool stuff but if it ever leaked it would be close to ww3 with the response you'd see. Stuff looks like a white powder but sparkly. Best not shipped. Works very well in epoxy...strengthens it too.

Pjay, i have used that pearlize medium you are speaking of, i open the top and dip in the Popsicle stick about 1/4" in and then stir my epoxy with what is on it, seems to be a nice mix for about 5 - 8 ml at a time. just figured i would give you a starting point.

hey , I was just looking around and saw this post. you shouldn't use "rubbing alchol here part of the wiki definition: Isopropyl rubbing alcohol USP
/B.P.
 contains 68–99% of isopropanol
(isopropyl alcohol) by volume, the remainder consisting of water, with or without colour additives, suitable stabilisers, and perfume oils.

the alcohol is the problem its the other crap that doesn't mix witk th epoxy. also another good epoxy thinner is acetone but i. the small amouts you would use on a plug use a eyedroper to add also testor does work used in rod production in a couple different ways.

there's a big difference though in denatured alcohol vs rubbing alcohol. Always use denatured.

thats sorta what I was getting at. rubbing alcohol. will screw up anything you add it to and someone wanted to know why thats why I added the ingredients that they add to it. :D

So people NEVER USE RUBBING ALCOHOL  (ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL)  !!!!!!!!!!

ONLY USE DENATURED ALCOHOL

Just for the record - I use 91% rubbing alcohol for epoxy cleanup, (not thinning) and it does a great job. I used to use Popov 100-proof vodka, but a month in rehab kinda convinced me that some things are best left alone. Not sure about Salty's sparkly white powder though. Wonder if it comes with a a razor blade and drinking straw in the package.

Yeah, I'm still here. If 20 years of guzzling rotgut liquor, two miserable ex-wives, innumerable brawls, and a couple of full-scale riots didn't kill me, then the Maya Indians don't stand a chance. Hey, has anybody checked to see if the Maya are still down there? Considering the fact that they're responsible for all this nonsense, it's entirely possible that they were the only ones who got the shaft during the recent apocalypse. Somebody get Lester Holt on the phone. People need to know.

Ok, scrolling through some older posts, am I correct by saying, fron this article I got...a few drops of denatured alcohol will thin the epoxy and make it a little smoother to apply?  And a few drops of pearlized createx in the epoxy will give it a shimmer of sorts?  Thx guys for all the info.

hey ther 2225 remember createx is a water based paint unless you found oil based......createx wont mix with epoxy.......not to sure what type of epoxy your useing but i personaly dont thin the epoxy   i use etex or flexcoat but and thats pretty much thin allready.......devcon 30min is way to thick for me so i dont bother useing it......but if u like to make your epoxy flow try useing a heat lamp while turning your plugs.....warm  not hot.......testor model paint work well for tinting your epoxy  and HOUSE OF COLORS  has some cool pearls that will suit your needs   good luck  and your plugs look great

Good stuff bill, also I warm the two parts in a bowl of warm water, not hot, seems to flow better for me, but Etex is pretty easy to work with

DO NOT use syringes that have silicone in them for lubrication...this is a common issue with doing this. bad juju

yea bhowe2225......nice isnt it     add some flakes to your mix ( glitter )  by CS coatings.   you want fine glitter  and not to much just a tinch...after your e-tex is mixed well, add a little glitter to the mix

good luck

Although this is a late entry this may help. Testers mixes with epoxy very well but I prefer mineral powder. you can find it at rod building sites. I build several rods a year and color epoxy often with no trouble. Clean up with denatured. isopropyl, 50% is good for thinning createx and clean up  for your airbrush.
