Title: FUN!
Post by: Out Fishing on March 19, 2014, 01:55:51 PM
Today was a great day. I put a 3/8" drillbit 1/2 way thru my hand today. Stupid stupid stupid.  :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Can still move my hand so I don't think I damaged anything. I flushed the daylights out of it several times. My fear is there is a piece of yellow cedar stuck in there off the drill bit. Since it don't rot there could be chance of serious infection if there is something still there.

You don't want to see it now. It got opened up tonite with a scalpel and tweezers. They think there's a pc of wood in there still. I've got a follow up on tues and they may have to cut it open again.

On top of having a 101 degree temp for the last 2 days and a case of walking pneumonia. Ugh.

and a case of walking pneumonia.

My doctor says the difference between "walking pneumonia" and a case of full blown pneumonia is whether you have the luxury of staying in bed with someone waiting on you.

If you can stay in bed and have someone wait on you while missing work and other obligations, then it's "full blown pneumonia".

If you have to get up and get moving regardless, (and find it in yourself to do so) then its called "walking pneumonia".

HAHA never saw this for some reason. I laughed.

Sooooo a week after this got opened I had a followup with my primary care doc. They did xrays then. I have this large bump in the middle of my palm. The xrays came back inconclusive. Doc recommended I see a hand surgeon to have a ultrasound done.

I decided to wait a week and see what happened. It had started to heal for a second time but it's been bugging the crap outta me burning and itching. The itching says it's healing. The burning is not good. So I make a hand surgeon appt which was yesterday and was supposed to have a ultrasound done. Ya sure. Another doctor more interested in the effin dr visit charges than anything else. I killed a half day at the umass hand clinic and all they did was take 3 more xrays. WTF!!!!! I leave there and they make an appt for the ultrasound on the 22nd is the earliest they got. Then I got to wait for results ANOTHER week for them to read it and go to ANOTHER dr appt because they won't tell me over the phone!

Meanwhile the thing was buggin the crap outta me again today. I looked at it and it had started pussing again just ever so slightly. I squeezed it and out pops this little blob of white stuff from an area that just opened up when I squeezed it. It was wicked slippery and perfectly white like teflon. You could roll it between your fingers and it didn't break down. Kind like a perfect little white booger. Sooo I squeeze it again and the pic below is what more came out of it. NASTY chit!!!

Anyone ever see anything like this? It's now swollen a whole bunch more from squeezing it. The bump has not gone down. This goop just came out like squeezing a zit. Looked like John Belushi in Animal House LOL

Called doc yesterday afternoon the nurse says go to urgent care last night. Saw the doc again that tried to plow the bump out she doesn't know what the white stuff was. We tried to get more out so she could culture it but nothing doing. Says she doesn't think it's infected. Soaked it again last night in epsom salts and some of the swelling went down today. Interesting that today when I bend my hand back the color of the skin changes on this bump now. It looks like there's something there....still betting there is a chunk of ayc in there.

My guess is you have a piece of wood in there that is raising all the commotion.

I wish you could go to my doctor here.  He is literally a country doctor, as his office is not more than 25 yards from a cornfield...the hospital room where my sons were born was even less!  Anyhow, it would have been a "one and done", as he would have been inside that hand and removing the offending whatever it is you have.

Some doctors like to doctor, and some like to make money, I guess...mine doesn't play golf and has only one house, which probably is related to his "one and done" business model. bananalama

Oh, and you need to get one of those hospital sterilizing units to put your drill bits in before you use them! :D

(I severed a tendon on a Browne & Sharpe Universal Grinder, so I didn't get through my tool & die days unscathed)

Frustrating bowfin. I been dealing with this for close to a month now.

Sterilize the bits. Ok :)

Only hurts like hell if I touch something. Got a VERY small sliver of ayc out of it by squeezing today. That piece is abt .010 thick by abt 1/8 long or slightly less to give you an idea of size. Peroxide in the hole again still foams like a bastid so there is definitely still something in there.

And when I say it hurts like hell i'm not kidding. yikes type of pain if it touches something.

I agree with your diagnosis, there is still something in there. My son had a piece of wood in his foot for some time, and when he finally went to the doctor, he dug it out but it still hurt.  Two days later, my son squeezed it and a second, bigger piece came out enough to grab it with the pliers.

...and yes, they hurt all out of proportion to their size.  I had one hurt so much that I stopped carrying stuff in my right pocket until it worked its way out enough to get hold of it, because it hurt to put my hand in my pocket.

Anyhow, glad you got part of it out.  Here's hoping the rest is evicted soon.

Today was the ultrasound appt at the hospital. The radiologist did an ultrasound then called in a hand surgeon to look at this again on ultrasound. HUGE abscess in my hand right now and the bottom of the hole where the drill bit went into is LESS THAN ONE millimeter from the tendon for my ring finger. He said one mm more and I would have lost use of my ring finger and would have been emergency hand surgery to try and attach the tendon again. Scary chit.

So the good news is they can't see anything. I showed them what the wood sliver looked like that came out and they looked real well but it looks like I dodge a serious bullet. Friday I go see the hand surgeon again and see what he recommends for what to do with this.

Pain has pretty much disappeared in the last few days. It is still pussing but the surgeon today said with the size of the hole there it would still be pussing for a while because of alot of space in the hand right now. Says he thinks it's a granuloma like the other doc said.

Scott - as you know I ususally only snoop around on the interwhatever.  No smart phone etc...  When I read the article about Salty's lures, I thought it was well written and describes you and your business well.

I signed in to say hello and found the FUN post.  You have a shitty record of keeping your hands attached.   This latest injury is unreal.  All I can say is you will be fighting this for a loooong while.  AYC is not too kind on cuts and healing.  Good thing you were not working with PT.   I wish you a speedy recovery with no after effects!

Hi Don glad to see you! Don't be such a snooper LOL

Tu for the article comments. It was completely unexpected so I read the thing and said wow to myself!

Doc says upwards of a year to heal this and may have to be opened again.  Shitty record for sure Don. That week of April 20 was the last of the pain. It's back again as of yesterday because I tried to open a soda bottle. You are right abt ayc and cuts. I see splinters alot working with the stuff on the chop saw and some splinters take 2-3 weeks to heal.

Oh and had a relapse of pneumonia last Friday night and been dealing with this again all week. More Xrays...up to 12 now in the last month...pretty soon I be glowing Chernobyl.  Another round of antibiotics and steroids. I'm getting 2-3 hours of sleep per night now.  :bash:

I would say there is a piece of wood in there Scott,I was a dock builder and getting CCA splinters all the time if you could not get them out they would fester up(getting infected and producing pus)what I believe is happening is the splinter is starting to decay in your hand usually they will pop out when squeezed after a few days if not the only solution besides waiting for a Dr. would be to try a drawing salve and wrap it with a bandage I would soak it in epsom salts again let your hand dry some and use the salve maybe it will draw it up enough for it to pop out. This may take a couple of days if the splinter is deep.Ask the pharmacist for the salve thats the old school name I believe it is called boil ease nowadays.
