Title: Newbie...Stupid question
Post by: Out Fishing on December 11, 2014, 02:30:43 PM
As stated, Newbie...I just got the Hobby Lathe from grizzly for my Christmas present, no idea how to turn lures....HELP!

Actually my question is to do with PAINTING... Do I need to airbrush my lures? Is there a applicator that I can attach to a paint can?
So, when you stop laughing, I would appreciate any help you could offer.

Welcome to the forum. Before you turn your lathe on I would suggest you spend some time watching youtube to learn basic turning skills and tool safety. You can get hurt very easily.

Most guys that paint with spray cans use what's called a "frisket" to mask things off or spray through. There are many videos on you tube on spray paint effects and how to do. I've seen some SICK spray jobs from guys online. You don't need an airbrush but for fine details etc there's no way to beat them. Single action good to start and dual action is good to upgrade to later when more advanced. Practice practice practice.

Thank you.   "Frisket"? Is that a tool or technique?   As far as youtube,  are you speaking of the wooden plug turning video's?  or Just turning videos in general?

turning videos in general. Learn how to turn and learn safety before you start so you don't get hurt.

Google frisket you should see alot.

Hoo Boy, information overload!  Youtube is great and a curse!!  LOL!

Epoxy Question.... do I thin out the 2 part epoxy?  Envirolite brand?   I've use the 2 syringe squeeze one and thinned out with a little acetone...
I don't have a turner and trying to cut down on smears...

Recommend DENATURED alcohol to thin with not acetone. Acetone will weaken the bond of epoxy..it will also destroy paint under it.

Youtube can be addicting. Information yes. Some good and some bad. Beware.

Is there a secret to drilling thru holes in turning blanks?  LOL! I bought a 1.5" Dowel and could not drill through straight.  I have a 12 " bit.  I have tried a drill and my hobby lathe...
Or am I going to be a life long Salty's customer?  Which I don't mind! LOL

If I get some time I'll try to do a video of how to do it on a lathe and a drill press.

Maybe that's the problem I don't have a drill press.... tried doing it by hand....

Drill press is the easiest way. Lathe second. By hand is asking for failure. Can be done but not easily.

Is it alright to weight test my own turned plugs in water before I seal them?
Title: Re: Newbie...Stupid question
Post by: Out Fishing on January 19, 2015, 09:54:37 AM
Only if you let them dry for a reaaaaaly long time. They should be sealed before they see water..

Thanks Scott, I didn't Want to just guess where my weights would go.
Do you sell your discarded wood blanks that doesn't meet your requirements?  Looking for 2x2 or little smaller.

Seal a lure and prime it then take a rubber band and put a weight where you think you want it and float test it. If it looks a bit heavy in freshwater remember saltwater is more buoyant.

I don't sell blemished product anymore. I burn it or it gets destroyed and put in a locked dumpster.

Do you feel your standard FRONT wire bend is sufficient or should I make the front like tail wrap?  I'm using 325lb AFW .

Sufficient for what? To not pull out? Hook it to your car and set your drag on full. Check it if it pulls. My guess is your drag will slip or your rod will break before you pull the wire.

Thanks for the update.

Is this the same kind of wire you use?  I don't mean to take business from you...does it come on a roll like this?

Scott, I know you said it takes about 5 days for sealer to dry and use... I soaked my lures for like 5 hrs or so...forgot about them. ( spar urethane and mineral spirits) I hung them for a day outside in a nice wind and they don't smell...are they ready?   What happens when you do paint over "not completely dried sealer"?  Peeling?

LOL I missed this for some reason. Well paint them and find out. If they bubble and the paint lifts you answered your own question :)

How long does it take epoxy to fully cure?  Is it suppose to be "rock hard" or still able to get off with a razor after one day?
Title: Re: Newbie...Stupid question
Post by: Out Fishing on March 27, 2015, 02:44:40 PM
Depends on the type of epoxy. What brand/make.
Title: Re: Newbie...Stupid question
Post by: Out Fishing on March 27, 2015, 03:06:56 PM
Envirotex
Title: Re: Newbie...Stupid question
Post by: Out Fishing on March 27, 2015, 04:04:16 PM
Envirotex is not the same as a epoxy I believe. Etex nevers really hardens it can stay slightly soft. Epoxy should be fully cured in 12 hours.

Hmmmm, didn't know that...

I had to scrape, sand, pick off the envirotex of my last batch, my lure spinner stopped spinning and there were globs of etex on lures....normally I can sand down imperfections, and do a real light coat to fix....it ruined one of my best paint jobs!!

that can happen. Murphy's law says it happens at the worst time.

I hear some paint epoxy and then hang it to drip dry, How does this work?  Good results?

Don't recommend you let epoxy drip dry. It will not end well.
