Title: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 08, 2010, 10:12:05 AM
I know you guys are anxiously awaiting some new tins to hit the market,  but in the meantime, I figured I'd post a few pictures of my latest  project in the hopes of tiding you over until the big announcement  comes. When I was a kid, there were a bunch of jigs hanging up in the  garage. They were old even back then, so I figure they were made in the  1940's, either by a small company that's long gone, or maybe by a  fisherman who made his own. Unfortunately, the only one I have left is  a 2.25 ounce spoon. The rest were stolen somewhere along the way. I  thought I'd make some new copies with some modifications. The process  was bit of a pain, since it involved making two molds. I made a mold  from the original, then cast a copy in plastic. I used clay to close up  the drilled holes and install brass eyelets. I also used clay to fill  in the dings, then I sanded the rough edges and coated the model with  multiple coats of clear acrylic. I then made an RTV mold from the  model, and I'm really pleased with the way they turned out. The  original was rigged with a stainless steel leader through the heavy end  and the hook at the small end. I reversed the rigging and found the  action to be about as good as these things get. It also casts better  this way. My metal polishing skills have a long way to go, but I'm sure  the fish won't care all that much. I wasn't sure the original was tin  because of the heavy patina, but the tin copy I made weighed exactly  the same, so I guess it was.

How many a pound are you getting with those? 8? I've been able to find small quantities of 99.9% tin for $11 a lb plus shipping. May pick some up this month. Going to get a different crucible though to keep things separate.

These are 2.25 ounces, so I figure 6+ per pound, close to 7. I bought my tin in 3+ pound ingots from Rotometals. Materials for a completed lure were just under $2.50, not including mold-making costs. I went on the Rotometals site a couple of days ago and I almost fell out of my chair: $13.99/pound! It had recently dropped from $12 to $11 a pound and they'd had a !0% off sale about a month ago, and like a freaking moron, I forgot about it until the deadline passed. Rotometals has free shipping on orders over $100, which helps. I also keep a melter exclusively for tin - any lead contamination and you can kiss the shine goodbye.

Many thanks for the compliments, guys, I'm really glad you like them. When I started doing this, I had no idea how addictive it was going to be. My wife is already beginning to notice signs of neglect in the yard. You might think I'd learned my lesson from all my years of fly tying and talking to plug builders, but once an addict, always an addict. I did a couple of rough clay prototypes for a classic-type butterfish tin yesterday, and they swam really nice, so I guess that's gonna be coming up next.

I knew some unscrupulous speculator was hoarding it and driving the price up. Better keep your supply under lock and key - I just bought a few of your kits, so I know where you live now. BTW: That's a better deal that I've been able to find lately. What's your source if you don't mind my asking. Or even if you do mind my asking. Good luck with your project as long as you don't show me up too badly.

Jesus Salty, you weren't kidding when you said you were gonna corner the market. I hope you get your 60 pounds pretty soon or I'm gonna be reduced to breaking into saloons and ripping out the tap lines to salvage the tin. You must have been in the bathroom reading the Penthouse Forum when I managed to snap up my measly three pounds. Good thing I moved fast.

I just read in the Wall Street Journal that a guy in London who's been sitting on a couple of million tons is selling out and taking his profit. Anaconda also announced the discovery of a massive tin deposit in Northern Manitoba. The market price is expected to drop to $0.75/lb in the next month or so. Just to show you what a good guy I am, I'll give you $3/lb for your entire stock if you act today. I'd hate to see you get burned.  :satan:

Jesus, I don't know what indium is, but I'm glad I don't have to buy any. If you used that stuff to make lures, you'd have to keep them in a safe. Just got some tin from that guy in Ohio. Looks good. I was talking to a guy this morning who knew Charlie Graves back in the early 60's - he said that Charlie never used tin. His stuff was all plated lead. I knew the current CG stuff wasn't tin, but I was surprised that the originals weren't either. The guy I was talking to has a bunch of vintage tins he's gonna dig out to see if any of them can be modified. I've been looking high and low for old tins, and can't find any anywhere. Plugs everywhere, but no tins.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 18, 2010, 04:16:34 PM
The current CG stuff is both actually, there is a plated version and a tin version. The tin versions are lighter  and sink slower.

Unbelievable, isn't it? And that's Troy weight on top of everything plus $5 shipping. Why the hell would anybody buy at that price when you can get the exact same thing from Rotometals for $13.99 per REAL pound and shipping is free? God almighty, I'm in the wrong business.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 21, 2010, 11:19:29 AM
Don't know if you can tell much from the picture, but I tumbled the ones on the right for a couple of hours with stainless steel shot. The difference is pretty amazing. The shot burnished them to a mirror finish. I was wondering if this would work, and I would say that it does. I still like the ones I finished with just the Dremel, but the ones I tumbled are definitely flashier.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 21, 2010, 11:29:44 AM
did you tumble them dry or wet? you definitely can see the difference.I wonder what some burnishig compound would do.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 21, 2010, 12:22:00 PM
They were tumbled wet - just enough water to cover 2 pounds of shot in a 3-pound barrel, and a squirt of Dawn dishwashing detergent. I did a lot of reading before I bought the tumbler, especially on some jewelry finishing sites. The consensus seemed to be that the Dawn works as well as any of the commercial compounds. (and a hell of a lot cheaper) Apparently, all detergents don't work - everybody recommended original Dawn or Ivory powder. I bought a 2-barrel tumbler so I could use one barrel for a mild abrasive run before burnishing. I think I'll pick up some plastic media and give that a try.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 21, 2010, 12:42:51 PM
Contenti makes a polishing soap that works PISSER on stainless. It's the only thing that even begins to touch the black mundge from tumbling. I've used Dawn too but don't find it cleans good enough.  Simple green works pretty good too. I use a commercial tumbling liquid burnisher for mine.

Not sure how either would work on tin.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 21, 2010, 01:13:38 PM
The tins were pretty clean to start with, which is probably why they came out looking so good. The water was almost clear when I was finished. My wife's got a lot of silver jewelry that could use some cleaning and polishing - I tumbled one bracelet, and there was a big improvement, but it still wasn't as clean as I would have liked. I'll have to check out the stuff you mentioned. I'd better get this right with her stuff or my head'll be going in the tumbler next.

Except for the toothpaste, it was starting to sound like a pretty good recipe for barbecue sauce. Come to think of it, most of the barbecue I've had around here would probably taste better with a little squirt of Colgate in the sauce. Gotta try the toothpaste. Maybe my pitbull would let me use some of hers. Thanks for the tip.

Not sure what mixing all those together does but ketchup and lemons are both acidic so the toothpaste is probably just a little bit of grit.

Jeez, are you still picking it up off eBay? I haven't seen anything decent on there since you cleaned out that guy in Ohio. Somebody had a TROY pound the other day for $45 (!) plus shipping. I'm gonna start keeping score - I think you're over your 60-pound threshold by now. If you keep hogging the market and your tins sell the way I think they're going to, I'm gonna wind up mining and smelting the stuff myself. I wonder how the food is in Bolivia.

Anyway I hope these tins do well. If they do it gives me another way to market stuff. If you didn't see in the other thread I did a whole ton of those microscuttlebuggers I want to take them to local shops and see if they'd be interested in stocking some of them. The world is limitless. Too bad you can't get rich doing it.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 25, 2010, 10:42:00 AM
I think you're gonna do just fine with the tins; there's not really a lot out there to choose from right now, especially if you don't like wasting time on waiting lists. The reaction to the ones I made has been nothing but positive, and they're just homemade stuff from a rubber mold. BTW: Those microscuttlebuggers would be a lot of fun for spring stripers in the river and the estuary around here.

Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 28, 2010, 10:15:54 PM
Handy, I suppose you could if you wanted to, but the advantage of tin lures is that they don't need any enhancement. If they get a little dingy looking, all you have to do is polish them up or melt them down and pour them again. Once you get into lead or lead alloys like Joe Martins does with Pt. Jude lures, then you have to go to plating because of the rapid oxidation of the metal. Tin oxidizes very slowly. One of the things I learned doing this project is that tin ranks only behind platinum, gold, and silver as a precious metal. It's  beautiful stuff to work with, and once you see it in the water, you'll forget all about chrome. I wish to hell it was cheaper, but that ain't gonna happen any time soon, especially with Salty sitting on a couple million tons of it. I'll bet as we speak, he's got a bunch of guys out there with Uzis and rottweilers standing guard over his stash. 8)

Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 31, 2010, 10:31:31 AM
No, I never have. About all I know about pewter is that it's lead-free nowadays. There was a conversation about it on tackleunderground.com a while back, so I checked on prices just for the heck of it, and it wasn't cheap. I know the reloading and freshwater jig guys use antimony as a hardening agent, but I wonder if it would affect the shine. I suppose any of those alloys would work OK unless the copper and/or antimony dull the finish.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on August 31, 2010, 03:35:47 PM
Interesting that some of these alloys have lead and some do not. Not sure what the copper etc would do with this. Probably be good to plate...bet that's how pj joe does it I bet his lead is a copper alloy to make it easier to plate.

Post by: Out Fishing on August 31, 2010, 05:36:10 PM
Could very well be - I seem to remember him saying it's an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, but that could very well be only part of the story. It's not like he's making baby food - nothing to stop him from having a few secret ingredients.

I cracked my lead pot. I look around online and all I find is 4" tall pots. This guys site says he has a chinese one that is bigger. I send him an email. No answer for a day. I call and a woman answers with just a hello. Not like a business or anything. Didn't even know if I was calling the right place. Says that the guy isn't available to call back in a few hours. I said screwit an hour later and just put the order in online. I hear nothing for 2 days. No ship notification etc. So I send the guy an email this morning asking if this has shipped yet. Sends me back a flippant reply. HA! Crotchety old fuck he's 84 years old.

C'mon Salty, give the guy a break. He probably got a little confused and sent the order to Stockbridge instead of Uxbridge. Or maybe Greenland or New Guinea. Or sent the invoice to some place he lived 75 years ago. A natural mistake. And I'd appreciate it if you'd tone down the way you talk about senior citizens. Hell, I'm a proud veteran of the War of 1812, (or was it 1912?) and I'm not the least bit crotchety....... unless of course, one of you ignorant sons of bitches does something to piss me off. Like asking a civil question, for example. Or making stupid comments about the weather....or telling me you can cast 300 yards.....or pissing and moaning about how your wife gets sick of you never being around during fishing season......or bragging about the pack of imbeciles you raised......or using poppers in broad daylight in the middle of July.....or coming within 100 yards of me on a jetty......or thinking for one minute that I give a rat's ass about your pathetic political rants when you think Benito Mussolini is an Italian appetizer ..............................what the hell was I talking about, anyway? PISS ON THE LOT OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! Besides, I don't have time for this shit; my daughter's on her way over to feed me my strained carrots. Wonder what she looks like. Come to think of it, I can't even remember having a daughter.......I'll bet the bastards are coming over here to kill me and steal the Confederate money I've been saving up......why the hell am I talking to you morons anyway? Just took my meds - I should be OK for the rest of today. And if you gentlemen will excuse me, the tunas require my presence at the shore. We hung around for two hours yesterday and it was completely dead. My buddy and I reeled up and as I was zipping up my bag to leave, (you guessed it) the albies blew up ten feet in front of the rock I was standing on. Nobody hooked up, but we saw more fish yesterday that I saw all last year. Hope it's the start of a trend. All we need is a S/SW wind and we'll be in business. Lots of activity is starting around here, and people are getting bass, some of them big.

And the FISH. I did some with thru wire and a few with eyes. I like the thru wire better. Going to order 1000 of the wires Monday. These need to be polished and they'll get painted with black on the backs and red gill slits

Well done! I love those classic designs. Just like the stuff I remember from back when I was kid and woolly mammoths roamed New England. I'd say that plundering half the world's tin supply is gonna pay off. I really like that fish mold - is that DC 3120?

Dunno what dc3120 is. That's a copy of a tin I found online.

Dow Corning 3120 is a heat-resistant RTV silicone - it's the same color as your mold, that's why I asked. Supposed to be great stuff, but you need a vacuum chamber, which is why I don't use it. Again, nice job on the tins. Hope you do well with them.

no this is contenti mold material meant to do spincasting. It gets vulcanized and is good for I think about 1000 degrees. It comes in as basically 4 pancakes of clay like material that the pieces get pressed into.

Bad mold or not, your stuff looks terrific. Charlie Graves' tins are gonna have some serious competition. About time. There'll be a lot of shooting the breeze on the beach around here in the next couple of months - I'll be happy to send what business I can in your direction. My own stuff has already drawn some attention, so I'd say there's a good deal of interest in the real McCoy, especially if you don't have to stand in line to get them.

You're not kidding that's a score. No point in screwing around when something like that pops up - it's time to pounce. I've bought 40 pounds at $8.50/lb in the past couple of weeks - I figure if I don't use it, I can always sell it. Or maybe make a few 10-ounce tuna tins. If I start ordering some of those heavy-duty triple split rings of yours, you'll know what I'm up to. Actually, that's not a bad idea come to think of it. Don't know how the hell I'd test them though.

Beats the heck out of me. Some of the vintage pieces I've seen have idiosyncrasies that nobody seems to be able to explain. The old spoon design I modified had a couple of grooves on the concave side in the shape of a "V" and a single groove along one edge of the other side. I got rid of the "V" and left the other one in place just for the heck of it. A friend of mine has a similar spoon from the same era, (and also from the Westerly RI area) but from a different mold that his father had made - it also has the "V" grooves, but not the other one. We've racked our brains trying to come up with an explanation, but so far no luck.

I stand by my prediction that you're gonna have a waiting list. I showed my stuff to a friend who did an article on making tins for On the Water last fall, and the first thing he said was that demand was gonna greatly exceed supply. When his article came out, people were beating down his door trying to buy his stuff. He sold a few on the condition that the buyers keep their mouths shut - he doesn't have the time to be selling lures. One guy tried to order 2 dozen of a spoon he made that's similar to mine. My compliments on a job well done. Now you're gonna have to deal with some heat when your supply runs out.

Scott,          Tins swim great. Too bad the fish didn't show. Two 12" Blues on the 1 1/4 and a short bass 18"  on the 1 3/4 ? A few casts later and good by to that one. Bail on my 460 Slammer closed on me...Again!  :bash:  An other time for that! Feeding the crabs most of the time.   Next week, the week after, maybe the week after that. Man it was dead!   I like the "Pocket pack," will be placing an order. I have some fishing bud's wives to call, would be a great Christmas gift.Sooner than later...  Thanks again, Scott.     Tom C.

Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on October 30, 2010, 09:35:17 AM
Yeah, it has something to do with heavy rains in Indonesia and demand from China. There's so few places where the stuff is mined that all it takes is one big weather event to really screw up the market. Glad I stocked up when I did. China's a big tin producer, but they must be going through it like candy if they're importing it. Better get it while you can - the outlook isn't good pricewise.

Post by: Out Fishing on November 22, 2010, 09:25:25 AM
No, it ain't bad, considering. Where the heck are you finding this stuff? I've got about 45 pounds in my stash and I don't need any more, but I like to scrounge around just for the fun of it, and I haven't seen any deals in quite some time. The prices on eBay are beyond ridiculous, considering you can get foundry-grade stuff for $15/lb from Rotometals with free shipping. Anybody paying eBay prices should have their head examined.

You must be a lot better than I am at doing searches. you should be - I can't find my car keys or the TV remote three quarters of the time. The only way I can find my cell phone is to call it from the house phone. I lived here a year before I could find my driveway without driving past it at least once. Too few brain cells, too much $8-a-gallon vodka. :-X
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on November 22, 2010, 03:14:41 PM
nah when I see someone pop on there with some I check every week or so, I shoot them an email and ask them how much they got then if they'll give me a buck off a pound or whatever I will tell them to send me a invoice for the whole thing. Most of these guys are reasonable. Some of them like you and I have seen are downright freakin crooks.

If I knew that guy selling the pounds for $19.99 was selling them I'd go buy a few hundred pounds from rotometals at a time and put it on ebay and make $3.00 a lb after the ebay fees :)

where did you see 10% off?
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on November 24, 2010, 02:54:36 PM
Jeez, I didn't realize the price had gone up yet again. It was $14.99 the last time I checked, which was only a few days ago. It's gone from $9.99 to $15.99 in less than a year. That's a hell of a jump. I get their newsletter, since I've bought from them in the past. The coupon code for the 10% off is "stuffed" and it's good through Sunday. They often run 10% off sales on holiday weekends.
Title: Re: Tin Spoons
Post by: Out Fishing on November 24, 2010, 04:21:18 PM
yea that's not any deal either, it would have been better if they hadn't already wiped out the savings in the price increase. That still makes it $14.40/lb. yikes.

Yeah Bill, I know about one of those gold mines too. (or more correctly, a tin mine) Literally thousands of them of every design under the sun, some going back at least to the 1920's - I'd love to get digging privileges for an hour, but I have a better chance of being elected to the U.S. Senate. I've got a small collection of classic pieces, but they more or less fell into my lap, and there's no way I'm gonna fish them. I'm still hoping for yard sale lightning to strike, but I'm not gonna hold my breath. Still, it's fun to look. Salty's Pasquales are a real find, there can't be many of them still around. You don't come across stuff like that every day unless you happen to have some serious burglar skills. Maybe I should look into getting some training in that field.

LOL...Peter, when I bought mine I got them from a tackle shop in the Outer Banks. They still carry them as they were cheaper to buy at the time than Hopkins...I'm checking to see if they still have them. If so, I'll be making a purchase (that is unless Salty is offering his...)

I have the original AllStar 10'6" that I got from a friend who was testing and later became a salesman for them. It is rigged for an Abu Sports Rocket and slings that metal more than 130 yards with ease...I know because I can toss it across the creek I live on and hit the neighbor's yard.

Got the moldmax for the pasquale's the other day.

Very nice, especially the one with the fish tail - that's a beauty. I've gotta get on the stick and get some new ones done myself - can't let Salty get all the glory.  ;D

Scott,

Are you going to offer those for sale? Especially the bottom one. That one is just plain sexy! It has "bay anchovy" written all over it for our conditions.

Been busy setting up a painting studio in the basement and also learning to paint in Photoshop. My plug kits and 45 pounds of tin are still sitting there, but at least I bought some sealer and a rotisserie to make a turner. There aren't enough freaking hours in a day.
