Rick from Minnesota, mostly muskies and smallies around here and up through the Canadian border lakes, Lake of the Woods, Rainy, etc.

And the annual trip to Alaska on the Kenai for kings, reds and silver salmon.  My daughters both share ice fshing and the boat when they can.  My son is on his own and usually steals the best spots on the lakes (at least that is where I usually see his boat)!

Salty's kits are the best!  Definitely something these pressured local fish have never seen,

you know, I live in NY, but fish jersey. It's the same distance to either place, I should really give NY a shot. they say they measure their fish in pounds where jersey you measure in inches.

new caledonia is a beautiful country with mountains a lagoon at the same place
good place to fish but there are a lot of boats, mostly near noumea
have to go far to have good fishing spots
i fish mostly on the west coast
i use home made lures, poppers and stickbaits
with friends we have a internet site with many pics : www.xtrem-fishing.com/

now we are on "winter"
best season to fish is summer, groupers are more actives and we can catch wahoo
between the 2 seasons there is a lot of wind, hard with my little boat

Hey guys - I've been hanging around here long enough now that I figured I'd better come clean and tell you all who I am. Besides, the statute of limitations has run out on most of my activities and a key witness for the state was recently (and conveniently) found in a dumpster, so I guess it's safe. I'm Peter Jacobson: Ashaway, RI native, long-time fly tyer, fisherman, visual artist, musician, and all-around undesirable. I also used to be a fishing columnist until the commercial crowd got tired of hearing the truth and decided I'd been walking around with healthy kneecaps just about long enough. (OK, I'm exaggerating a little, but pissing people off comes naturally to me, and I'm still not sure how I avoided winding up in a chum line) I just started lure making last winter, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I was gonna build plugs, but after I bought some of Salty's kits, it became obvious that I wouldn't live long enough to catch up to the real craftsmen, so I decided to stick with the kits and concentrate on tins. I really enjoy this site and appreciate all the information that's here for the asking. My own area of expertise is fly tying, and if I can contribute anything, I'll be more than happy to help out.

ALERT ALERT WE HAVE A FLY FLICKER ON THE SITE. CLOSE ALL LINKS. BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES. WE HAVE BEEN IN-PENETRATED

LOL I'm a former fly flicker. I don't even think I can cast anymore.

Your ok Peter we'll keep you around for a bit just stay away from my tin stash :)

Post by: Out Fishing on August 28, 2010, 10:49:43 PM
Hey Handy, I think we may have found Salty's panic button - maybe we should start a fly thread and see if it gets us kicked off the site. (got some nice albacore flies ready for the epoxy) Another week or so and it'll be tunas on the incoming and bass on the outgoing - man, this is a great place to live. Probably a good thing we don't have muskies around here or my wife would've already had me declared legally dead. Or maybe illegally dead.

Handy, I'll be the first to admit that I'm missing a couple of screws here and there, but I'm not suicidal. I just bought some Pikies and Scuttlebuggers, so Salty's got my address. The last thing I want to find in my mailbox is a ticking package. He sounds mad enough already. Guess I'd better post a few fly pix, or I'll lose what little credibility I have left around here.

Here goes...I'm Bill. Live in a small fishing village in Maryland (yes, we still have these!) about 14 miles south of Annapolis. I live on the Chesapeake Bay and fish for stripers, blues (the smaller cousin of the northern ones!) and just about anything else I can fish for. I travel a lot for business and fish anywhere I can. I've hunted stripers in the salt and brackish water from North Carolina to Maine and even on the left coast in the Sacramento delta...I'll offer an invitation to anyone who gets south...you are always welcome to chase linesiders by boat in the Chesapeake with me!

Fishing is great! The topwater just started to heat up. May not sound like much but catching 10-20 24" plus fish in a morning on topwater is becoming the norm... the water temps are just about perfect and there is lots of bait to keep them active. Jigs in the water column are producing as well. This is the time of year we wait for! Come on down!

Howdy Bill. Welcome to Saltyland. Likewise, if your travels bring you to RI, I'll be happy to show you where the action is. It's usually ten miles or so from where I'm fishing, but I'll do my best. Of all the places we've lived, Maryland and Virginia were my favorites. That's a great part of the country.

Hey Randy - welcome to the forum. Good to see another graybeard around here. Maybe we can all get together and get a group discount on walkers in time for next season. BTW - there's a little Chinese guy who bottom-fishes with us while we're throwing flies at albacore, and he says sea robins are delicious. At least that's what I think he said. Either that or he was explaining the finer points of quantum physics. It's hard to tell sometimes.

Good to see quite a few from close by in Pa and NJ.  I do fish out of Ocean City NJ mostly for offshore species, just started jigging for tuna, always trolled or chunked for them.  I runa  38 Ocean  "All In"  Will be building some poppers for topwater BFT's.  For years have pursued stripers with bucktails and wood.

I fish RI 99% of the time, mostly Weekapaug and Watch Hill, and occasionally Quonochontaug. Hello
my name is Andrew.  i grew up fishing the cape and islands.  Live and work in Boston now.  I fish salt and fresh from maine to NY.  I mostly fish saltwater but have begun doing a lot more freshwater in the early spring while i wait for the blues and stripers to arrive.  I have found several great largemouth spots in the falmouth area (email me if your interested).  A note to Shark, i too am lacking a lathe.  I was able to find several nice wood carving knives online and have had countless hours of complete happiness carving lures from Salty's 4ft Port Orford Cedar Balusters.  On that note, ANY tips or advice is very welcome.  I started this without any idea what i was doing.  I still know very little so no advice is too basic.  If i can figure out how to post pics, i will send in what i have made so far (mostly darters, big mouth poppers and pencil poppers).  Thanks and Happy Fishing to one and all!

Hi guys! my name is keith and I'm from the tiny town of Mi
llville,MA. I spend a ton of time in the woods or on the water and always with my two boys (6 & 16) . I was brought up fishing Westport Ma and that's where I spend most of my time.  I started building my own rods last year and love the feeling you get catching something on what you built!  This seemed like a logical hobby! I bought a lathe and played around with some cheap balluster stock and now its time to get down to business!!! As long as the snow cuts me a break!

My name is Roy from Melbourne Fl  I fish surf with plugs I made a few years back--Atom 40s'spooks, dannys and Mullet look alikes--Last week caught a 21 pound Snook at 36 inches long on a Danny painted to look like a mullet--Winds from Irene have us waiting to get back on beach after she is gone a week and things settle--Mullet run should be starting--Aug 1st hooked 3 tarpon and never landed one as after 10 or so minutes they each came unbuttoned and yes I bowed to each.  Getting ants in my pants till the surf calms--just ordered some wood for winter lathe turning some new designs--Tight lines and good to see kits like offered for newbies---I copied a couple years back and learned how they are weighted and how made.  A great way to start
I was called nipideddee years back and a lot of the old sites disappeared so just call me Roy and
good fishing to everyone

Hello Everyone. Glad to become part of this website and forum. My name is Chris but you can call me C4 (CHOICE IS YOURS). I live here in NJ and I'm a avid surf fisherman who seeks the striped bass from Martha's Vineyard all the way down to NJ. I am 12 yr veteran of NSWC and I recently finished up my contract (5th one) with Blackwater. I am new to lure building but have played around with this hobby for a couple of years now and I am hooked. This forum introduces to me very helpful and useful information and I am glad to become apart of it. My favorite plug to turn and build are the "pencils". Good luck with all your builds and thank you Salty for giving me the opportunity to join. Chris

My name is Matt and I am a flyfishing guide on the San Juan river in New Mexico.  My passion however is saltwater fishing.  I have spent 3 months (in the last 3 years) in Mexico and Belize fishing for Snook, Tarpon, Jacks, baracuda, and bonefish- flyfishing and spin fishing.  In this time I have lost over 6 surface Plugs to huge fish.  You Plugs look AWESOME Salty and I cant wait to try them out.  hook a brother up! Has anyone used these outside of the USA?

Hey guys, another new guy here.
My names Nate I live in CT.     I am a tuna nut !!
I've been surfcasting since I was a kid,  got pulled into the jig and pop scene for tuna about 3 years ago. We fish mostly on the cape, stellwagon or down the backside.     I got my lure building bug as a kid cutting off the shovel handles/closet rods, thru drilling and squirtin with rattle can's.
Looking forward to learning and sharing.................Tight lines

Hello all.  My second order from Salty's, love your lures.  If they are the diamonds in my surf bag, I must be rich.....lol.  I want a darter for this season, I know you don't custom (or shows, haha, this year) paint jobs, but please, please consider doing the 3 oz darter from the add last year again.  Yellow with red throat.  It really is the best darter color in moving water.  I know I could get a kit, but it would pale in comparison to your quality product.  A white darter in foamy water is not gonna do it, need all yellow.  Thanks again.

I have tried to buy plugs from the online and box stores, the quality of your lures just gives me no confidence in the plastics.

Sorry, all excited about my thought.  My name is Dave S.  I fish the surf in NJ but live in PA.  I started as a kid fishing for trout, then bass.....now that is just bait.  I hope to one day go plug fishing in Panama on the Pacific coast, as my dream trip.  If I do, my round nose swimmer will be in my luggage.  haha.  Thanks for the great plugs.

Hello, my name is Mike and I am an addict........to surf fishing and surf fishing related stuff.

I watched something on '60 minutes' today, about an autistic kid that could not communicate until he was given an IPad with a special app, and then after getting the IPad everything just poured out of him. I kinda feel the same way.

I have been monitoring the site for a few weeks, just checking it out without commitment.

1) Scott, what you have built here is absolutely amazing, as are your lures and plug kits; I have purchased a few of each. I am looking forward to purchasing more!!!

2) The advice and help I have seen given here has been great, and I thank everyone before me for their contribution. I have already used the advice of many people and look forward from gaining more knowledge from everyone else. Hopefully one day I can pass on that knowledge myself.

3) The inspiration on this site to expand and do more is scary!!!! I might soon have a woodworking shop in my apartment.....until the landlord kicks me out.

About me:

I have been fishing satly waters for about 25 years. I live in Queens, NY now but have lived in RI, NJ, and PA. While I have enjoyed fishing the Mecca of surf fishing (Montauk) my heart is truely in fishing Southern RI.  I was drawn to this site because of the natural progression for fishing plugs to building plugs. For now my efforts are concentrated on rehabbing damaged lures, because a) I'm cheap, and b) my living situation doesn't allow for a work shop. This is where the Plug Kits are soooo awesome. They are opening up a door that I didn't know was there until recently.

Thank you,

Mike

My name is Michael Jones.  I hunt, fish, reload, cast bullets, plant trees for wildlife habitat, can my own hot peppers, while rearing three sons with my wife of 21+ years here in Nebraska.  I don't seem to have the time to tie flies, canoe, camp, hike, metal detect, or hobby machining, which are all things I would love to do more.

I have been a tool & die guy, CNC machinist, electronics service technician, and now work in the IT department for a public utility company.

I stumbled across this website looking for lure bodies.  Actually, I would rather buy lures than make them, since I have WAY more interests in life than time.  (My biggest pet peeve is anyone whining "But there's nothing to do here!")

I have noticed that a lot of the older lures are being withdrawn from the manufacturers' product line.  The Bass Oreno, the Sputterfuss, etc.  I put in an order today for some finished lures and kits (kits are for my brother's birthday) before I even perused the whole website.

Thanks to Salty for the great products, a fine forum, and...uhmm...maybe some more freshwater designs for us trapped inland.

It was 11 here in the valley this morning. Truck didn't like starting this morning it growled when I started it. I had to stop plugging it in I got a $260 electric bill for all those cold days. If it goes down to single digits again I got to start plugging it in again.

Some dumb sh it drove off last month with the cord plugged in. I keep seeing little pieces of orange cord down the side of the road. I found one plug so far :)

Good morning!  As a first post on this site, I came across Salty's while reading popper threads on some other sites.  These lures look great, but unfortunately for me I missed the free shipping special by a couple of days.  Well, spring yard work is calling...........

Hey guys.  My name is Bill.  I'm from the Jersey Shore.  I'm a huge fan of fluke and blackfish fishing.  Striped bass on plugs is also one of my favorites.  My self pro claimed "moment in the sun" was a 16.4 lbs blackfish caught in 03.

Nice Handy.  Maybe we will run into each other during the fall bass run.  I just did a private charter with 6 of my buddies this past Saturday out of Highlands.  18 keepers fluke.  About 50 shorts.  I had a 7.23 lbs to win our little pool.  Fun day, that's for sure.

I'm Tom from CT in the western LIS, (that's Long Island Sound for you out-of-staters). I fish both fresh and salt, but truly enjoy the salt. As my moniker says, I'm strictly a small water guy, coves, inlets, rivers and inshore with a little surf fishing thrown in. I am often derided for my enjoyment of  plugging for bluefish, but they are a blast to catch and release and that's what it's about to me.
I visited the site for a few months first as a guest and liked what I saw, so I signed up.
Some of you guys are true artists when it comes to air brushing. I have some experience air brushing, painting military models and dioramas way back in the 70s. I kept my old Badger 150, hopefully I'll be able to dust it off and start production.
 That's all I got!

Welcome aboard Tom. It isn't every day we see somebody willing to risk his reputation by joining up with this nest of fiends and deviates. If you're not used to seeing guys wearing dresses and baying at the moon, don't let it throw you; stuff like that is considered normal around here. These dudes have sniffed a lot of adhesives for a lot of years, and Salty will be the first guy to tell you that healthy brain cells are overrated.

I guess I never introduced myself. Andy...obviously! I am NJ born and raised and the only one of my family that hasn't been able to make the break yet. My dad taught me to fish when I was very young and it has been a passion my whole life. But now I guide for my dad and the rest of my family in Florida or Maine, or anyplace else we vacation.

I used to fish the ponds and lakes near me when I was young but have pretty much moved to all saltwater as an adult. I fish out of a Hobie Outback kayak (with the pedals). I love it. I've caught fluke to sharks in it and couldn't be happier doing it.

I guess I began to appreciate the beauty of the wood lures I was seeing on another forum and eventually couldn't resist building, and more importantly, painting my own. But I didn't want to have a factory in the livingroom of my apartment so Salty's kits were the perfect solution. I bought a ton of the ones that looked cool to me but have really ended up focussing on just a few designs that I actually liked fishing too. The slopehead troller has been my go-to lure in the spring. They outproduce anything my buddies are fishing on most days. So that is the kit I keep reloading on. I have about 7 big poppers sanded and sealed that I am looking forward to finishing before my Panama trip in February.

I guess that's it. Oh, and I do like to fish the Chesapeake Bay and the CBBT as often as I can make the trip there. And I have been chasing my first Tarpon in Florida for about 4 years now. No joy yet but I have a good feeling! I also fish in Costa Rica at least once a year. Rhode Island and MTK are not out of the question either. So many great places to fish, so little time! :)

Andy

Aloha!

Todd from Kona, Hawaii here. I've been fishing my whole life, both freshwater and salt. Finally settled here in Hawaii and began fishing for the larger pelagic, especially the Pacific Blue Marlin.

I have many well-known trolling lure makers as friends, and like to pour my own shapes when I get the chance. I've recently been bitten with the shoreline whipping and dunking bug, so I decided to try my hand at building and painting my own as well.

So far I've finished 10 kits, with pretty good results, and have narrowed it down to a few poppers that the papio, omilu, and ulua here in Kona seem to like. Just started touch-up sanding and hardening my next batch of Salty's, and couldn't be happier with the entire process.

Look forward to many years of lure making ahead and reading/posting in this forum.

Mahalo nui loa, and A hui hou!

Salt!   Salt is the mineral.  Wow was that difficult.  Now that I registered I will have to go back to first grade, I put every mineral that Google offered in there and then I realized I was trying to hard.  New to lure making but mess with duck calls and other carpentry related  projects.   Looking to start with plugs and go from there.  Seems like lots of good people on here and great info.

Hello, my name is Barry and this is all new to me.I live on Plum Island which is a barrier island off the coast of Newburyport Ma. About 4 years ago I after a 40-year hiatus, I came back to surf fishing.I'm a surf guy, and also a plug guy so I guess I'm at the right place.I have just ordered and received my first order from Salty,4 Dandies, and 1 Popper. Never used an airbrush but I know the theory of how so I may be back asking for help on that subject. I do have one question though. Does anyone use Polyurethane as a finishing agent, and if so do you brush it or airbrush. Please give me your feedback.

Hi All

My name is Qasim, I'm from London UK.

Been shore fishing around UK and Norway for a few years now and hoping to hit south Oman early next year which means a new style of fishing for me. Got interested in putting together my own lures after seeing how much some of the quality ones actually cost!!

Joined this forum hoping to pick up pointers on what kind of lures to buy from Salty's and also what kind of designs to apply to them once purchased.

Tight lines

Not sure what you have for questions but sure go ahead. Most of the guys we send stuff to in Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi etc are fishing big stuff like 2.5oz and up, triple split rings, built heavy. But I've seen a bunch of them do smaller stuff too so guess they have all different sizes of baits like we have here. all the same lures we use here for stripers work well there also.

Hello my name is Pat Patrick and I live and fish around Marblehead, MA which is about eighteen miles north of Boston MA.  Originally from Florida and born on the water so to speak I have been fishing all of my life for one scaly thing or another.  Last year I hit 70 yo and decided to fish as much as possible from here on out.  It is said "God does not subtract from a man's time on earth that time a man spends fishing". Well I am going to test that one for sure.
I just started making wooden lures because my second career is restoration carpentry so I have the skills and materials to make a go of it.  Made two last year which seemed to work, so I have gone into it more seriously in preparation for this season.  I hope to learn much from this site and the members who share their knowledge so freely.
My love is night fishing.  I love to be out by myself at the coast or an inlet at night.  The world is so calm and quiet and there is a different feel to the environment and the creatures of the night.  Top water poppers are my specialty and big ones at that.  I believe that big lures catch big fish.  It's always been true for me at least.  Of course I also believe that lures catch fishermen first and then a fish if the fisherman is lucky.  Hey it's just fun and a privilege to be able to fish as much as I get to now.  My thanks to my wife of fifty years who is so supportive of my fishing and all the stuff and smells that come along with it.  Thanks honey.

Hello. Even though I am an experienced MA/NC surf caster, I have never fished the CC Canal. This year I will however. Have gear will travel. If anyone would be so kind as to take on a Canal rookie for tag along I would be grateful. Also happy to buy bait if you teach me how to use it!  Experienced night fisher, know plugs and fish behavior well, can throw a plug a mile. But Canal naive and willing to learn.
