Post by: skiddd on August 27, 2010, 05:05:29 PM
Hey fellas, I soaked my 4 oz. Conrads in blo and mineral spirits, how many days till its dry/ready to paint? I soaked them monday morning for three hours, while they were soaking i made sure to get in the holes and even took them out 3 times to rub the solution in then put them back in.  They have been hanging since monday at 10:00 am.... thanks fellas

say skiddd........zinsser has a product out there  called BULLS EYE  SEALCOAT  its a universal sanding sealer and its 100% wax free shellac..........soak your plugs in it for  5-10 min...or until you dont see any minni bubbles making the way to the top of the shellac....youll see what im talkin about...........some grain may rise on the plug but just sand it down a little this stuff dryes quick.......but give the plugs extra cureing time..........say like overnight............keep it simple..........stuff easy to use.......drys fast........it works for me.........and it will get your plugs in the water quicker 8)

skiddd  dont forget to turn your plug slowly to prevent sags

Did that, I made a drying stand out of a rod drying motor. You'll be getting a lot more questions fellas.... Thanks again........ Montauk soon, YEAH BABYYYYY SALTY PLUGS ARE GONNA GET SOME WORK(If I sealed right) lol  I think the 3oz. darter is gonna be a killer under the light, the super strike in yellow is my go to, but not the same as doing it yourself(painting and sealing I meen) the old Gibbs darters were a 3 hook design, they swim better than a 2 hook design, my opinion thats all. Be safe fellas, tight lines to all!!!!!!!!

Handyman,
Saw the Zinsser, SealCoat, universal sanding sealer, 100% wax free, Product #00851 at Lowes today. Is that right one? What primer do you use with it?
Didn't like working with BLO/Terp. (1st timer)
Have a "Canal Monster" still in the bag... will be ordering more kits. I like the sanding sealer idea.
Thanks,
          Tom C.

hey croaker  100% wax free shellac product # on my can is 00854......but that might be a manufacture #.... the primer i use is rust-oleum painters touch 2X primer......just let your plug sit in the stuff till it absourbs the shellac youll see these little bubbles comming to the surface then they will stop......wipe any excess off  with a stir stick or a used saltys threw-wire  i save alot of the cut ends of the wire i use them as stir sticks for epoxy or what ever      just let the plug dry good before primeming

good luck tom c.

well it depends on what stuff u picked up......if its the  sanding sealer by zinsser  use it stright dont dilute it..... give the plug a good soaking  5-10 min but make sure the plug is submerged under the sealer and its an oilbased product....   and let cure overnight.....dont rush cause if the drying time is rushed  the plug could run into problems.......like bubbles in the epoxy and when the plugs gets wet the paint & epoxy will peel off     drying/ curing is emportant :)

hey Joe, Handyman really knows how to hurt a guy.  I'm the expert when it comes to bubbling paint and peeling epoxy off my finished plugs.     I'm still finding plugs that are bubbling.

Handy knows what he's talking about.  The sanding sealer is really good stuff.

zinsser is what i use oilbased....shellac 100% wax free thats the stuff    you know just when im ready to do the threw wire and hook up the belly hook  i like to mix up some devcon two/part and insert it into the belly hook whole... not alot just enough to coat the inside of the whole....  just keep in mind that when you soak your plug some grain may rise in the wood lightly sand and recoat if needed.......good luck....
